MY PRESENTATION PROPOSAL WAS ACCEPTED! On Friday, November 9, I presented at the North Carolina School Counselors Association (NCSCA) fall conference in Greensboro, NC. My topic was our newly implemented bullying prevention program “Stand-Up”. We incoporate weekly videos (featuring students and staff) and positive messages of character to create a better school environment. On Thursday, I attended a session lead by Scott Ertl (of Winston-Salem) on Kinesthetic learning. One of the icebreakers included meeting someone new and explaining what led you to the field of counseling. Eddie Crabtree, my high school counselor and varsity soccer coach was one of my inspirations. At the time I didn’t think life could get any better than being surrounded by soccer and helping students with problems 24/7! Having Coach Crabtree as a role model helped lay the foundation for the work I do today.
To my surprise Mr. and Mrs. Crabtree are both counselors in North Carolina and members of NCSCA. They attend the conference regularly, saw my name in the program and wanted to surprise me by attending my session. I opened with the question, “How do you know when you’re on the right path?” The answer is simple. The stars begin to align and God will provide confirmation check points along your journey. The honor of having MY former school counselor (and his wife) in my first EVER session at the NCSCA fall conference was my most recent confirmation check point.
As educators we plant seeds. If we’re fortunate enough we’ll see them blossom. I was blessed to share such a special moment with one of the educational farmers of my generation.
Who were your educational farmers? Who helped mold you into the person you are today? Have you had the opportunity to thank them?
